Former Chief Justice, Justice Sophia A. Boafoa Akuffo has been appointed to chair governing council of the University of Ghana, Legon-Accra.
Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Amos Oppong Amankwah, Ms. Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu, Nana Wereko Ampim-Opoku, and Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah are also in the governing council as government nominees.
Others are Mr. Richard Obeng Okrah, Assoc. Prof. Nana Akua Anyidoho, Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah, Prof. Mohammed Salifu, Prof Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, Mrs. Anastasia Thomford Okyere, Dr. Samuel N. Nkumban, Mr. Kwame Amo Ntow Fianko, and Mr. Adofo Yaw Kwakye, Mr. Kenneth Botchwey.
Four other council members are yet to be appointed.
The University of Ghana is governed by the University Council consisting of eighteen (18) members.
The duties of the Council include but are not limited to determining the strategic direction of the University, promoting means of generating income for the university, and appointing professors to the University.
The University of Ghana was established by the University of Ghana Act, 1961 (Act 79) to replace the then University College of Ghana. The Act was amended in 2010 by the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806).
The University is a body corporate with a legal personality and can sue and be sued in its name. It is a public tertiary institution and currently receives funding from the Government of Ghana
The University is a tax-exempt institution per the Internal Revenue Act, 2000 (Act 592) and is also exempted from paying property rates imposed by the local government.
