Former Ghana international Dan Quaye has said Otto Addo is not to blame for the Black Stars defeat to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The West African powerhouse shockingly suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Falcon Jediane at the Benina Martyrs Stadium in Libya on Tuesday afternoon.
The result leave the Black Stars on the verge of failing to qualify for the CAF’s biggest tournament to be held in Morocco next year.
Ghana last failed to qualify for the AFCON tournament in 2004 and will now need a miracle to secure a spot next year.
In an interview with Bryt FM on Adekyee Mu Nsem, the former Hearts of Oak defender jumped to the defense of Otto Addo after the defeat while attributing the Black Stars recent poor showing to the players.
“No one should blame the coach. We should rather blame the players because they are not serious. The players are selected based on their performance at club, so why don’t they exhibit same perform for the Black Stars when invited” he quizzed.
“Truth be told, these crop of players are indiscipline and it hard time we address it. Players who are not ready to play for the national team can decline call up. I think that is better than to accept call up and play anyhow and break the hearts of over millions of Ghanaians”
“We cannot blame the coach for this defeat. Our defenders were poor. We committed silly mistakes in the game and that cost us defeat. I’m highly disappointed because we can’t just miss out on AFCON in this group. The Sudanese played as Ghana” he added.
Ghana now needs to secure wins against already-qualified Angola and Niger, while hoping that Sudan falters against these same opponents, to keep their chances alive for next year’s tournament in Morocco.
