Former Ghana international Dan Owusu has explained why the current cohort of players in the national team has refused to give their all.
Despite the abundance of individual talents in the country, Black Stars have experienced a decline in recent years. Since 2017, the West Africa powerhouse has won only one of their last 10 AFCON matches, facing challenges in both qualifying and friendly matches.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, the three-time Ghana Premier League goal king explained why current Black Stars players have botched to contribute significantly to the national team.
“Ghanaians have complained about the commitment of Black Stars players in recent time and I think it is about how players are treated in the team. It’s about time we change our style of managing players”
“I got injured before the 1978 AFCON and nothing better came out of it. I was treated but along the line I was neglected. Jerry Akaminko and other players have suffered similar situation before. I think current crop of players have noticed what happened in the past and have advised themselves. All these are contributing factor to the team struggle which needs to be solved as soon as possible” he said.
The Black Stars bowed out at group stage at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, failing to win any of their group games.
