Abraham Asare, a 52-year-old former employee who resigned from the Ghana Water Company Limited’s Amanorkrom Office in 2022,has been arrested in Larteh-Akuapem for allegedly stealing 23 pieces of 8-inch ductile iron pipes.
These pipes constitute a crucial part of an active distribution main line, supplying water to local residents.
Responding to a distress call, the police apprehended Asare and his accomplices, catching them in the act of loading the stolen pipes into a KIA truck at approximately 6:30 pm on December 12, 2023.
The estimated value of one 8-inch ductile iron pipe is around Ghc13,000, resulting in a total cost of Ghc 299,000 for the stolen items.
“Following a distress call, the police followed up to meet Asare , who was stationed in the Amanorkrom Office of the Company and his accomplices loading the pipes into a KIA truck around 6:30 pm yesterday (12 December 2023).The cost of one 8 inches ductile iron pipe is approximately 13, 000 ghc ,so the total cost of the items is 299,000ghc” Eastern Regional Public Relations officer for GWCL Kwadwo Daase said.
This incident highlights a recurring challenge for the Ghana Water Company Limited, as it grapples with multiple cases of theft, including meter stealing, removal of metallic covers for its chambers, and stealing of electric cables from its plants.
The arrest underscores the ongoing efforts to address these security concerns within the company.
Already, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the region is also facing rising transformer and cable thefts in the region affecting it’s operations in recent times.
