Former Italy striker Totò Schillaci, who inspired his country to third place at the 1990 World Cup, has died. He was 59.
His ‘government’ name was Salvatore Schillaci.
The name ‘Totò’ was a shortened form of the first name. Surname is pronounced Ski-lah-chee.
Schillaci, who played for clubs including Juventus and Inter, had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2022.
Schillaci had only made one appearance for Italy before his starring role at the 1990 World Cup, and he didn’t even start in their opener against Austria.
He came off the bench to score the winner in that game and went on to score in the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and third place play-off.
People in Italy didn’t know much about him before the tournament, and he was only called up because a Napoli player got injured just before camping started.
