Mr. Benard Kwame Bussy, former General Secretary of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), has advised students who experience sexual harassment in schools to follow the right reporting procedures.
According to him, the first step is for victim students to report such incidents to a teacher she can trust. “That teache is then expected to further report the matter to the Head of Department or forward it to the committee responsible for handling sexual harassment cases. If investigations prove the accused teacher guilty, the law must take its course”.
He further explained that if the school authorities fail to take action, parents have the right to follow the same reporting process.
“Should the parents still be dissatisfied with the outcome, they can seek redress through the appropriate legal channels” he stated.
Mr. Bussy stressed that due process must be followed before escalating matters outside the school.
He, however, encouraged parents to take keen interest in their children’s education by monitoring them closely and offering the necessary guidance when issues arise.
To teachers, he gave a strong caution, noting that the teaching profession comes with many temptations. He urged teachers to remain truthful and focused on their duties, adding that any teacher found guilty of misconduct would face the consequences of the law.
Mr. Bussy made these remarks in an interview on Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Binney when commenting on recent video of an Assistant headmaster and a student in a compromising situation.
