Francis Asante, a finance lecturer based in the United States, has strongly criticized former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney, Mr. Asante accused the former president of delivering a speech filled with propaganda and lacking truthfulness.
According to Mr. Asante, Nana Addo’s claim of leaving a strong economy for President John Dramani Mahama is “unfortunate and untrue”
He argued that Ghana’s economic situation before seeking assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was dire, with a debt-to-GDP ratio of 105%.
“This is a president who vowed never to go to the IMF, but due to bad governance and corruption, Ghana had no choice but to run to the IMF,” Mr. Asante asserted.
He also criticized the administration for allegedly concealing the true state of the economy, saying, “The exchange rate, inflation rate, and youth unemployment figures continue to expose the Nana Addo-Bawumia administration.”
Mr. Asante further noted that the propaganda in the SONA is a key reason why investors are hesitant to inject their money into the Ghanaian economy.
However, he commended President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to repositioning the economy to attract investors.
“Mahama has pledged to stabilize Ghana’s economy, and this is a positive step toward regaining investor confidence,” he said.
Mr. Asante also dismissed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claim of achieving sustainable economic growth, labeling the 7% growth projections as unsustainable and politically motivated.
He argued that any growth recorded by the NPP government was accidental and not based on solid economic principles.
He concluded by saying, “Ghanaians now know that the former president was not an honest man. What the country needs is sustainable growth, not the three or four months of growth the NPP government boasts about.”
Francis Asante’s comments add to the ongoing national debate on the state of Ghana’s economy and the legacy of the Nana Addo-Bawumia administration.
