Founder of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has praised Kennedy Agyapong, a presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his remarks regarding the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s (EC) insistence on using only the Ghana Card for the registration of new voters for the 2024 elections.
Kennedy Agyapong, who represents Assin Central as a member of parliament, stated that he opposes the proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI) that would make the Ghana Card the only form of identification accepted for voter registration.
“For Americans, even Ghanaians who have naturalized, they are so proud to hold an American passport. Ghana has people taking bogus decisions, and I wonder about those who sit there and take such decisions.
“That a whole Ghana passport, you claim that to register to vote, we won’t allow use the Ghana passport, we have lost our identity to National Identification, what?” he lamented this in an interview on Sompa FM.
He reaffirmed his vehement opposition to the proposal, posing the question, “How can I know I am a Ghanaian? My passport is in there.
Franklin Cudjoe responded to him in a tweet sent out on March 13, 2023, calling the Assin Central MP a sane man for rejecting the EC’s proposal, which he claimed would deprive Ghanaians of their right to vote.
He continued by expressing optimism that further members of the dominant New Patriotic Party (NPP) will join the MP in opposing the EC’s plan.
“Kennedy Agyapong is a very sensible man. He rejects the Electoral Commission’s latest attempt to disenfranchise a section of voters. May many in the NPP follow Kennedy’s practical thinking on the EC,” the tweet the MP shared.
