The much-touted Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, according to Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mantey, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, is now problematic and requires a serious response from the government to address the situation.
Headmasters are straining to administer their schools due to financial delays, according to the clergyman, but they are frightened of being penalized by the government if they complain.
“Ghanaians must be cautious of free things; parents who can afford to pay must pay,” he pointed out during the 70th-anniversary celebration of Abetifi Presbyterian College of Education (ABETICOE) in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
He praised the project, stating that despite the immediate difficulties it has faced, it is still one of the government’s best policies.
He also took use of the occasion to remind Ghanaians that his role as Moderator and Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana is not to criticize or oppose the government.
He believes it is his job as the leader of the two Christian groups to support and aid the government in power.
“As a moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, it is not my duty to join the opposition. No! No! No! No! I must help every government no matter which government it is to succeed and I will do my best to help the government to succeed and pray for this government that the government will succeed and do better to the glory of God.”
