Michael Blackson, a comedian and philanthropist, has formally joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after the government successfully paid ₵6.081 billion in Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) coupons.
After his school, the Michael Blackson Academy, finally received the money it was due, Blackson posted on social media to share his relief and excitement. This was a response to more than $1 million of his money being invested during the Akufo-Addo regime.
“Look at God! This is a great start for all bondholders. As of today, I’m officially a member of the NDC party. @JDMahama, you just put a smile on the faces of the kids at my free school,” he wrote.
In addition, Blackson made fun of the previous administration by saying that he never consented to donate his funds to help preserve any country.
The comedian’s statement comes after President John Dramani Mahama ordered the government to meet its DDEP duties.
According to a Ministry of Finance release, bondholders received ₵6.081 billion in cash coupons and ₵3.46 billion in Payment-In-Kind (PIK) that were credited to their individual securities accounts.
In order to act as a buffer for the fifth coupon payment that is due in July and August of 2025, ₵9.7 billion has also been deposited into the Debt Service Recovery Cedi Account (Sinking Fund).
Through responsible budgetary policies, the government reaffirmed its commitment to stabilizing the Cedi, lowering inflation, boosting employment, and reviving market confidence.
