The Fulani community in Ghana is calling for justice over the killing of cattle by Konkonbas in Sabongida and Nanumba all in the Northern Region of Ghana.
According to the group at least 80 cattle have been killed in the two communities.
The Public Relations Officer of the Fulani Community, Ahmed Barry explained that in a statement Tuesday, April 28, 2020, that, “Our team has been informed about killing of cattle by some indigenes at Sabongida in the Nanumba district in the northern region of Ghana .20 cattle were shot and killed and their meat is taken away by the indigenes who happened to be only Konkonbas.”
According to the PRO, “we decided to meet up with the cattle owners and they showed us pictures of what had happened about a week ago. They reported the incident to the MCE at Bimbila already which he promised to let the police arrest the perpetrators and bring them to book. We decided to meet with him and he explained saying that he will organize the military with police to go to the village and arrest them but then the suspects are very stubborn. He also said that for the past 3 years they have been harassing herdsmen in this manner whenever the herdsmen come to graze around Sabongida, Giije and Dakpam areas in the dry season”
He said” When the police and joint military went there on 24th of this month to arrest them, the whole village attacked the joint security forces after they arrested their leader and he was able to run away with handcuffs on his hand. The joint security forces had no option than to leave.”
According to the PRO of the Fulani community, after the security team fled from the community, the Konkonbas remobilized and invaded the bush again to kill over 60 cattle because the herdsmen had reported their atrocities to the police. He said, sadly the security forces couldn’t go back to maintain law and order due to what happened earlier in the day.
He alleged that the Minister of Defence Dominic Nitiwul ordered the release of some few individuals arrested later.
“In the evening the Assemblyman of the area brought the suspect who made away with the handcuffs later and another 3 suspects reported the next day. They were detained by the police for 2 days and were granted bail all because the defense minister asks the police commander to grant them the bill. But we will pursue this case till we see how is going to end.”
