Mybrytfmonline.com has gathered that the rescue team at the mining collapse incident at Bremang in the Central region is struggling to get enough excavators to help in the rescue operation due to the reluctance of owners of excavators in the area to release excavators required for fear of being burnt.
So far, 5 persons have been retrieved dead while 7 survivors are in critical condition.
It is believed that the number of persons trapped in the pit could be about 40 with many being women.
A deep mining pit collapsed on illegal miners who sneaked out to work in the night at Bremang in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central region.
An eyewitness, Fatau, told Dadi FM morning show host Abena Pokua Ahwenee that, the incident occurred from about 4:00am to 5:00am Wednesday.
He added, “The majority of the illegal miners could be women because they carry the gold dust for washing during such period”.
“The incident occurred 4 to 5 am in Bremang. Men and women who went to illegally mine gold at night were trapped under the galamsey pit last. Three (3) have been retrieved dead, two (2) rescued but in critical condition, 15 are still trapped. The rescue team says they are going to get excavators. The women may be many because the women carry the load for washing .the pit is about two light poles deep. Very deep”
The rescue team made up of Police, NADMO, Fire Service and Ambulance service are still at the scene and with the support of the locals making effort to retrieve the dozens of people trapped under the earth.
