As part of her working visit to the North East and Northern Region, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, (MoGCSP), Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu on Thursday, May 25th, 2023 led a team from the Ministry to pay a courtesy call on Ya-Na Abukari II, the Royal King of Dagbon at the Gbewaa Palace in the Yendi Municipality to brief him on the team’s mission to the area.
She also called on the Mion District Chief Executive and the Tamale Regional Police Commander.
The Minister, as part of her tour, visited the community of Zakpalsi in the Mion District where she held extensive meetings with the chief and residents.
The engagement was geared towards finding a lasting solution to the incidence of witchcraft accusations in the community.
Interacting with the Chief and the Media, the Minister urged them to educate members of the community and the public against the lynching of persons accused of witchcraft.
According to her, the laws of the country frowns on that hence, persons found culpable of perpetrating such acts will be charged and prosecuted.
She appealed to the Chiefs to support Government’s effort in fighting the menace.
The Chief of Zakpalsi and his council in turn gave their full assurance, support and commitment to fighting the incidence of witchcraft accusations in the area while ensuring that human lives are safeguarded.
The Minister also implored the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the offenders face the full rigor of the law.
Hon. Lariba took the chance to commiserate with the aggrieved families of two deceased accused of witchcraft in Zakpalsi in the Mion District.
The Minister was accompanied by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, Director for the Department of Gender, Ms. Faustina Acheampong, Mion DCE, Tamale Regional Police Commander, Regional Directors of Gender and Social Welfare.
