On Monday 28th August 2023, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, alongside the Chief Director, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, and the Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Faustina Acheampong, joined the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo in the launch of the ‘Gender Unifying Campaign’ in Ghana.
The campaign forms part of the strategic measures to fight for gender equality that can enable girls and women to contribute their quota to the development of the country.
In June this year, the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) launched a one-year campaign during its 20th anniversary celebration, under the theme, “We are equal. Working together, our society can be too”, with the aim to accelerate gender equality in Africa, through advocacy by member states.
At the Ghana launch event, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo appealed for actionable steps to provide women and girls with equitable access to healthcare, education, skills, and freedom from gender-based violence.
During the event, Hon. Lariba delivered a statement expressing the unwavering commitment of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) to support the First Lady’s office in ensuring the protection of all individuals, particularly children and women.
She thanked the First Lady for her tremendous efforts to always empower women and children and acknowledged her outstanding contributions towards the PICU and Mother and Baby Units.
Highlighting the initiative’s significance, Hon. Lariba Abudu underscored its role in bridging the gender gap and promoting the inclusion of women in developmental agendas across the African continent.
The Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration with Traditional and Religious Authorities, Civil Society Organizations, and corporate entities.
She urged these stakeholders to lend their support to the campaign.
The event was also attended by dignitaries such as the Deputy Minister of Health, Hon. Tina Gifty Naa Mensah, the Minister of Education, Hon. Yaw Adutwum, the Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Prof. Amin Alhassan, DG of Ghana Aids Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, Presidential Advisor on Gender, Dr Angela Asante, Deputy Country representative of UNFPA, Dr. Emmily Naphambo and many others.
