Accra, January 22, 2025 – In a bid to improve the feeding situation in public Senior High Schools, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has secured approval from the Office of the President to provide essential food items for a two-week period, from January 20 to February 3, 2025.
According to a memorandum from the Deputy Director-General of GES, Stephen Kwaku Owusu, the initiative will cover all public Senior High Schools, Senior High Technical Schools, and STEM schools. Schools are now authorized to procure food items based on a disbursement of Seven Cedis Fifty Pesewas (₵7.50) per student for boarding students and Three Cedis (₵3.00) per student for day students.
This funding aims to ensure that students receive nutritious meals during this period.
To ensure the smooth distribution of these resources, Heads of Day Schools are encouraged to engage private caterers for the provision of hot meals to students at the approved rates. Regional Directors of GES have been instructed to ensure compliance with relevant public procurement and financial management guidelines as schools implement this measure.
The Education Service has emphasized the importance of adhering to these guidelines for the successful execution of the initiative. The approval comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to support education and enhance the learning environment for students across the country.
Regional Directors are expected to monitor schools closely to ensure that the necessary steps are followed, with an emphasis on transparency and accountability in the procurement process.
