Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations(GFDO) has called upon the Parliament of Ghana to expedite the amendment of the Persons With Disability Act (Act 715). Abdul-Wahab Adam, the Program Officer for the Federation, emphasized the need to bring the legislation in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities.
During a media address in Koforidua, Adam ,stressed the importance of Parliament’s role in implementing the UN Convention, urging the state to be proactive in ensuring the rights of Persons With Disabilities are protected.
He highlighted the Federation’s belief that engaging with the Disability Caucus of Parliament would enhance the effective participation of Persons With Disabilities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Adam urged the State and Members of Parliament to collaborate with the Federation, asking pertinent questions to promote inclusivity in parliamentary dealings.
Additionally, he called on the government to respond to the issues raised by the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Rights of Persons With Disability during Ghana’s 2022 review.
In response to these concerns, Hon. Emmanuel Marfo, the Member of Parliament for Oforikrom Constituency and Acting Chair of the Disability Caucus in Parliament, assured that the Caucus would ensure the prompt presentation of the amendment bill.
He underlined the Caucus’s responsibility to address the Federation’s concerns in accordance with the UN Conventions.
Hon. Clement Abas Apaak, the Ranking Member of the Disability Caucus and MP for Builsa South Constituency, echoed the commitment to engaging with the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
He stressed the necessity for the Executive arm of the government to display a willingness to collaborate in re-enacting the Disability Act.
Finally, Hon. Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Ranking Member of the Disability Caucus and MP for Tema East Constituency, challenged the government to demonstrate its commitment to protecting marginalized communities. He emphasized the timely release of Disability funds in the District Assembly Common Fund as a crucial step toward fulfilling this commitment.
The Disability Caucus in Parliament remains dedicated to ensuring that the concerns of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations are addressed promptly, in alignment with international standards and the rights of Persons With Disabilities.
