There was seething anger among applicants of Ghana card on Tuesday afternoon at Ministries registration center in Koforidua after officials of National Identification Authority (NIA) asked applicants who had queued since morning to leave since they cannot be registered as at 1:10pm.
The NIA officials did not give any tangible reason for their inability to register applicants including those who were there for replacement.
The officials only gave the applicants numbers to report on Wednesday.
The applicants some of whom are nursing mothers had traveled from far and near places including Assesewa to the regional capital to be registered only to be disappointed by NIA officials.
“We don’t understand why they have asked us to leave because it is 1:10pm and there are just a few of us left in the queue. They could have even let us fill the forms because some of us will go to work tomorrow so coming to queue the whole day in the is not fair”. Angry applicant fumed
Some of the angry applicants alleged the NIA officials accepted applicants through the backdoor to facilitate their registration.
The Ghana Card will soon become the single most accepted card for identification for Ghanaians and ID card for all financial transactions in the country.
It is the only acceptable card currently for the ongoing SIM card registration exercise.
As part of the government’s plan to migrate all identification numbers onto the National Identification card, also known as Ghana card, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust on June 28, 2021, began processes to merge all SSNIT numbers to the Ghana card.
The merger is also in compliance with Regulation 7 (1) of the National Identity Register Regulations, 2012, L.I. 2111, and a directive from the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA).
The intended merger is expected to improve the ease of doing business with the Trust by enabling a more convenient means to allow members to use one card that is the Ghana Card, for all transactions.
Over one million SSNIT contributors have had their unique scheme numbers merged with the Ghana Card as of last month
