Ghana has recorded twenty-five (25) new infections of Coronavirus bringing the total number of cases confirmed in the country to 52 with 2 fatalities.
The new cases were recorded less than 24 hours after officials of Ghana Health Service (GHS) announced Monday three new cases which tallied to twenty-seven (27).
Giving details on the new infections at a press briefing by the Ministry of Information on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu said, the 25 new cases were confirmed from about 185 out of 1030 travelers on mandatory quarantine after arriving in the country from Sunday, March 22, 2020.
“For the 185 test results received, we have 25 of those quarantined tested positive. If you add on to the earlier number of 27, it means we have 52 tested positive in our country at the moment” The Minister sadly stated.
As of March 23, 2020, 14:00, a total of 521 suspected cases have been tested for COVID-19 by Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR).
A statement by GHS explained further that “Out of the suspected, twenty-seven (27) cases including two (2) deaths has been confirmed. All the twenty-five (25) confirmed cases are receiving treatment in isolation. Among the confirmed cases, twenty (20) are of Ghanaian nationality, the majority of whom returned home from affected countries. Seven (7) are of other nationals namely: Norway, Lebanon, China, France, UK.
“In respect of contact tracing, a total of 598 contacts have been identified and are being tracked. One (1) of the contacts developed symptoms and has been confirmed positive. Nineteen (19) people have completed the 14 days of mandatory follow up”.
Ghana recorded the first case of coronavirus on March 13, 2020.
Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo having suspended all social gatherings including Church activities and helps control the spread of the disease.
Closed down schools since March 16, 2020 and on Saturday, March 18, 2020 announced the closure of all borders – Land, Sea, and Air space. Also, mandatory 14 days quarantine for all permitted travelers to Ghana as part of enhanced measures to control the spread of the disease.
Experts have suggested lockdown of the National Capital Accra and Ashanti Regional Capital -Kumasi to help control the spread of the disease.
