The Greater Accra Regional Police Command is grappling with the organization of three concurrent demonstrations scheduled to take place at the Jubilee House.
The demonstrations, proposed by “Democracy Hub,” “Patriotic Hub,” and “Patriotic Forum for Accountable Governance,” have prompted security concerns and legal action by the Ghana Police Service.
According to statement issued by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command ,Democracy Hub’s submitted a notice on October 11, 2023, outlining plans for a demonstration from December 1 to December 31, 2023. The purpose is to demand the resignation of the President.
On October 12, 2023,another group call “Patriotic Hub” also submitted another notice for a demonstration supporting Ghana’s progress, scheduled for every 24 hours from December 1 to December 31, 2023.
The third notice, submitted on October 23, 2023, by “Patriotic Forum for Accountable Governance,” proposes a procession from December 1, 2023, to January 5, 2024, expressing appreciation to the President.
According to the Police , Security assessments indicated potential conflicts due to the overlapping events, especially during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Therefore Police engaged with organizers, suggesting alternative dates and locations to ensure public safety.
Due to disagreements, the Police took legal action, filing an application at the High Court on November 15, 2023, seeking an order to prohibit the events.
Hearing of the application will be done on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
The Police reiterated their commitment to upholding democratic freedoms while prioritizing public safety.
The Greater Accra Regional Police has therefore proposed alternative dates for the demonstrations after January 5, 2024, to avoid operational constraints during the festive season.
