Ghana’s Police Service has notified the public that it will be conducting mass burial for 200 unidentified and unclaimed bodies
The burials will begin “by close of work this week” according to a statement released by the police on Monday.
The move aims to decongest the mortuary of the country’s police hospital, an official told the BBC.
The bodies, which accumulated over the past six months, include those of hit-and-run accident victims, and poor people who die on the street, Yaw Nketta-Yeboah, an official of the Ghana Police Hospital said.
They also include unidentified crime victims and some who died on admission to hospitals but were abandoned by families, he added.
The police hospital urged members of the public to try contact its pathology department from Monday this week to help identify the bodies.
It said this was to prevent a situation where bodies would be wrongly earmarked for mass burial.
The police hospital has periodically conducted mass burials for unclaimed bodies – despite burials being an important cultural aspect in the West African nation.
