A session of the Ghana Premier League clubs has called on the Sports Ministry to allow fans to attend stadiums to watch matches in the ongoing campaign.
The government in March placed a ban on all sporting facilities due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, after months of inactiveness, the government lifted off the ban on football and authorized each match venue to admit only 25% of its capacity.
However, prior to the commencement of the new Ghana Premier League campaign in November, the Ministry of Sports placed a ban on stadium attendance for spectators citing a rapid increase in the novel disease as a reason for the ban.
Clubs have been at the losing end and have lost huge sums of monies as a result of the decision by the ministry.
Despite the ban, some supporters have defied the coronavirus protocols to attend matches which have become the talking points in the country.
However, according to some of the clubs, it is about time the government lift the ban to allow spectators to the stadium since they are running at a lost.
The Public Relations Officer of Great Olympics Saint Osei who was seen celebrating with the fans at the Accra Sports Stadium after their 1-0 win over Kotoko in an interview with Angel FM in Accra observed authorities in the country are being hypocritical and has therefore charged them to ease the restriction.
“Some authorities are being hypocritical and it is becoming too much. What is the essence of keeping supporters outside most of the stadium when we have political parties assembling and doing campaigns? It is about time they take a second look at this issue” he said.
The Ghana Football Association has referred both Ashantigold and Aduana Stars to the Disciplinary Committee for allowing fans to the stadium in their outstanding league matches on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
But according to Saint Osei, he does not support it and has entreated the government to take a second look at their decision.
Evans Oppong, Communications Officer of Aduana Stars submitting his views on the same platform indicated clubs are running at a loss and for that matter, calling on the government to lift the ban and allow fans to the stadium in subsequent matches.
