Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor on 11th November 2022, as they prepare to wrap up their participation in the ongoing COP27 held a series of meetings aimed at building stronger partnerships in forest and nature-based climate solutions.
First, the minister met with officials of Wildlife Works, the world’s leading REDD+ project developer that delivers international carbon finance to Indigenous people, local communities and the global south governments.
After a series of engagements, we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Group to create world-class REDD+ projects that contribute to Ghana’s ambitious emission reductions and nature conservation goals.
He also met with the Rt. Hon. Lord Frank Zacharias Robin Goldsmith, UK’s Minister for Overseas Territories, Commonwealth, Energy, Climate and Environment at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). We had a fruitful discussion on how Ghana and the United Kingdom can collaborate to deliver nature-based solutions to climate change at scale.
Later in the day, the minister met Citibank’s Head of Public Sector Group for Africa and Managing Director, Mr Peter M. Sullivan, to discuss options of Debt for Nature Swap. President Akufo- Addo has been championing debt for climate swap at this COP27, and we intend to engage stakeholders to bring this to fruition.
Finally, Mr Abu Jinapor met with the United States Senator, Ben Cardin of Maryland, to discuss matters of food security and climate change.
“The nexus between climate change and food security cannot be overemphasized”.
“We have, therefore, committed to working with the United States to ensure sustainable production of food, while at the same time protecting our forests and natural landscape” he stated.
Ghana, under the outstanding leadership of President Akufo-Addo, is showing leadership in nature-based climate actions, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will continue to support the President’s initiatives to come to grips with the climate crisis.
