Lameck Bagerbaseh and Abubakari Yakubu-Lea made sure Ghana end her adventure at the ITF/CAT West and Central Africa Junior Championship on an outstanding note by winning the boys U-14 singles and doubles title at Lome’ Togo.
The Ghanaian duo has been one of the country’s brightest prospects at the tournaments as the two met in the boy’s U-14 singles final and doubles final with Lameck Bagerbaseh of University Practice Senior High Cape Coast, beating Abubakari Yakubu-Lea of St. John’s Grammar SHS. 6-2,4-6,6-4 in the boys singles final.
This win will definitely push the Ghanaian duo up the ladder to rank among the top 20 best junior players in Africa.
Lameck Bagerbaseh and Abubakari Yakubu-Lea automatically qualify for the main ITF African Junior Championship as individuals.
However, In the boy’s 14 and under doubles, Ghana’s Abubakari Yakubu-Lea partnered Eytan Miessem of Gabon to beat Ghanaian duo Raphael Ankrah of Uncle Rich School, Winneba and Lameck Bagerbaseh to win Ghana’s 2nd Gold medal. 2-6,7-5,11-9
The boys U-14 team (Lameck Bagerbaseh, Abubakari Yakubu-Lea, and Raphael Nii Ankrah) won Ghana’s third Gold medal in the team events.
This makes the Ghanian trio qualify for the main ITF African Junior Championship team events slated in April at Madagascar.
Head coach Noah Bagerbaseh assisted by coach Richard Ayi Dartey and Yahya Macaulay who led the players through the two-week long tournament were all smiles as Ghana won 3 gold medals after several attempts at clinching the top prize.
Countries that featured in this year’s Championship qualifier included Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon and Congo.
The rest are Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone and host Togo.
