Ghanaian defender Issah Yakubu has emerged as a transfer target for South African Premier Soccer League clubs due to his swashbuckling performance in the ongoing campaign for Stade Malien.
The 25-year-old departed Ghana for Cote d’Ivoire on a free transfer two seasons ago after his contract with Dreams FC expired at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.
Yakubu was an instant hit in the Ivorian Ligue 1 with top-notch performances, which attracted the top sides in the country and outside.
The former Ghana U23 player earned a place in the team of the season of the Ivorian championship with his consistent performances.
Despite interest from other clubs, the highly-rated defender opted to join Stade Malien before the start of the 2023/24 season.
And since joining the Malian club, the former Dreams FC captain has become an instant hit, helping the club to reach the quarterfinals of both CAF Confederations Cup and Coup de Mali this season.
The touch-tackling defender has managed 17 appearances out of 20 in the Malian Premier League this season. Stade Malian are currently third on the league table as they chase the title.
He has already won the Malian Super Cup with Stade Malien after triumphing over AS Real Bamako in September 2023.
The highly-rated defender has emerged strongly on the radar of top South African teams due to his breathtaking performance this season and are keen on securing his services ahead of next season.
Sources close to Bryt Power Sports indicates that club’s said to be interested in the rock-solid defender have already contacted the player as they seek to lure him ahead of the next campaign.
Issah Yakubu is currently weighing up his options and will engage the leadership of Stade Malien before final decision.
He was in action when Dreams FC shockingly inflicted a 2-1 win over Stade Malien in Bamako. He is expected to travel with his outfit to Ghana ahead of the return fixture to be staged at the Baba Yara Stadium this Sunday.
