The chairperson for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Josephine Nkrumah has noted that Ghanaians are becoming more descending due to the outcome of the 2020 general election.
According to her, the 2016 election was an eye-opener and charged the two leading Political Parties which have been ruling since 1992 to take lessons from the 2020 election results.
Speaking on Joy FM’s “the Probe” program, Madam Josephine Nkrumah called for calm among the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress who are challenging some results from the general election.
She called on them to call their supporters to order for the Country to continue to enjoy its peace and said 2020 had been a year where Separative groups and matters of vigilantism broke out suddenly and dramatically and called on the Security Agencies to be Proactive.
On the issue of the rejected ballot in the 2020 election, Madam Josephine Nkrumah said the NCCE should not be blamed because it is not their core mandate to educate eligible voters on how to vote, rather the Electoral Commission.
Despite the widespread public education on how to cast ballots, rejected ballots almost doubled from 167,349 in the general election of 2016 to 313,397 in the 2020 elections.
Some 149,813 rejected ballots were recorded in 1992; 111,108 in 1996; 119,372 in 2000; 188,123 in 2004; 205,843 in 2008, 243,280 in 2012 and 167,349 in 2016.
On workforce and Resources, Madam Josephine Nkrumah said the Commission since 2012 had received many Vehicles and increases staff strength.
She however lauded the media, civil society organizations, and President Akufo-Addo for supporting the NCCE to get enough resources for the past two years.
