The public Relations Officer for Sekondi Prisons, DSP Nester Adjettey has pleaded with Ghanaians to contribute and show support to the various prisons in the country.
According to him, the funds from the state for the upkeep and feeding of these inmates are quite insufficient thus they are unable to be taken care of properly.
Speaking in an interview with Abena Pokuaa Ahwenee on Dadi 101.1 FM, he revealed that the state only provides each individual with 1.80 pesewas for their upkeep which prohibits them from feeding them with nutritious foods.
“The money from the state doesn’t allow us to feed them properly because the money from the state for each individual is 1.80 pesewas which are not enough for them”
He added that the usual meals they can afford to the prisoners are white porridge “Koko” and “Banku” since it is the cheapest on the market.
“At the moment they take in porridge in the morning and eat Banku for lunch and supper because that is what the money provided to them can afford. They only eat rice once a while and even with that only on holidays”, he said.
He, therefore, urged Ghanaians to donate and contribute to the prisons in the country to enable its development and ensure the comfortability of the inmates.
He added that the perception that prisoners are lawbreakers and do not deserve any form of love must be eradicated because showing love to these inmates will help them become better people and will help the country to develop.
“If we want them to become better people in the country then we should try and support the state to help them feel comfortable so that when they come out they can become great leaders and help in the development of the country”.
