The 18-Member Committee to Sanitize Ghana’s Mining Sub-sector is embarking on a nationwide consultation to develop a blueprint for the reformation and sanitization of the mining sector.
The committee, chaired by Professor Oteng Ababio of the University of Ghana, has been given a few weeks to create a strategy that will serve as a guide for reforming Ghana’s mining sector.
Speaking to the media during the committee’s stakeholders engagement at Akatakyieso in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti region, Prof. Oteng Ababio revealed that the committee is committed to ensuring responsible mining practices in the country.
“We are proposing that access to mining permits be processed at district levels with DISEC monitoring teams,” Prof. Oteng Ababio said.
Mr. Sampson Kofi Wiredu, National Vice Chairman of Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, expressed his organization’s readiness to support the government in ensuring responsible mining practices.
“We are committed to supporting the government to ensure responsible mining in the country,” Mr. Wiredu said.
