The field of development of a country is concerned with the causes of underdevelopment and with policies that may accelerate the rate of growth of a country, concerns are related to each other, it is possible to devise policies that are likely to accelerate growth through, for example, an analysis of the experiences of other developing countries.
On this account, the Assembly member for Sasa Bomso Electoral Area in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, Hon. Andrews Owusu has emphasized the causes of underdevelopment in Ghana on lack of national policies and actions that may accelerate development.
“There are those who are concerned with development ideas on humanitarian grounds; that is, with the problem of helping the people of this country to attain certain minimum material standards of living in terms of food, clothing, shelter, health, education good road networks and many others. Economic development aims to improve the living standard of the people which should also be a state of objectives of policy-making of all governments for all”, he stressed.
To policymakers and economists, “attempting to achieve government’s objectives, therefore, an understanding of economic development, especially in its policy dimensions, is important”.
He narrated that, those who are concerned with development are mostly for their partisan points, positional gains, and personal interest because they believe it is what the people in the country want or because they believe that political stability can be assured only with satisfactory rates of economic growth.
These motives, according to the Assembly member speaking with the media are immature as a country in this 21st century and therefore urged the leaders in the country to desist from partisan manifestos, set goals and policies for national development.
