Med El Academy, in collaboration with the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Speech, Hearing & Therapy Centre, marked World Hearing Day with a special training for mothers of children with cochlear implants.
Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service joined as Special Guest, pointing out the need for support and inclusivity for persons with hearing impairments.
He shared that the day holds personal significance as it coincides with his birthday, reinforcing his advocacy for people with disabilities.
“…You are the first line of support for your children. Understanding hearing impairment and applying the strategies shared here will help their language development and inclusion in society…,” he told parents present.
He also reaffirmed his dedication to disability inclusion, referencing a directive to Regional Directors after consultations with the National Disability Council and the Federation of People with Disabilities.
Additionally, he announced plans to engage the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) to explore assembling affordable cochlear implants in Ghana, strengthening access to hearing care.
