Nana Owiredu Wadie (I), Nkosuohene of Kwahu Nkwatia and founder of the Kabaka Foundation, has been recognized by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for his outstanding contributions to healthcare in the Eastern Region.
He was honored under the Ghana Health Service Council and Director General Awards category for Chiefs who have significantly developed health services in their regions.
Nana Owiredu Wadie (I) emerged as the only chief from the Eastern Region to receive such recognition during the prestigious GHS Excellence Awards 2024.
The citation, received on his behalf by Henry Larbi, Executive Director of the Kabaka Foundation, lauded Nana Wadie for his philanthropic efforts, notably the construction and furnishing of a Multipurpose Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and a 40-bed Mothers’ Hostel at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua in 2023.
These initiatives have greatly enhanced healthcare delivery for women, children, and neonates in the region in line with the sustainable development Goals on health.
The citation read:”In recognition of your remarkable dedication and contribution to advancing healthcare delivery at the Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua. Your philanthropic efforts, including the construction and furnishing of a Multipurpose Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and a 40-bed Mothers’ Hostel at the Eastern Regional Hospital, have greatly contributed to improved healthcare for women, children, and neonates. The GHS deeply appreciates this monumental support, which stands as a beacon of hope, compassion, and an enduring legacy for future generations.”
The awards ceremony saw the attendance of high-profile dignitaries, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Deputy Minister of Health (also MP for Nsuta), the Presidential Advisor on Health, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, and WHO Ghana Country Director Dr. Frank Lule.
Mrs. Araba Kudiabor, Chairperson of the GHS Excellence Awards Planning Committee, expressed gratitude to all attendees and highlighted the purpose of the awards. She stated:
“The GHS Excellence Awards, launched in 2022, aims to recognize the exceptional dedication and achievements of healthcare professionals and institutions. This initiative is part of the Ghana Health Service’s broader performance management strategy, inspiring ongoing improvement and setting a standard of excellence for the future”.
This year, the awards recognized 979 individuals and institutions nationwide, with winners emerging from district, regional, and national levels.
At the national level, 77 awards were presented, including general staff awards, institutional and leadership excellence awards, and special recognition for significant contributions to healthcare.
