A tertiary group called The Concern Tertiary Students of GIJ (CTSG) are calling for the government’s intervention to reduce the sudden increment of tuition fee for the 2020/2021 academic year.
According to the vibrant student association, the increment in the facility user fee (school fees) is unreasonable as they feel the fees paid for last semester were not used for its purpose.
In a random interview with some students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), they said the increment came as a shock for them.
“We were thinking that the school will reduce our school fees based on the outbreak of the coronavirus disease. This is because we did not use the school’s facilities, which we were being paid for from March until now,” a student said.
It’s heartbreaking to wake up and hear rumours of us weekend Public Relations students paying more than what we paid during a fresh admission. It was like a dream. Most of us have lost our jobs due to this outbreak including our parents. Where at all are we going to get this money? They should just put their selves in our shoes,” another student lamented.
In expressing their grievances to mybrytfmonline.com some students averred that what hurts the most is the schools’ failure to send a communiqué to the students concerning the rumour.
“We confirmed these rumours when the fees were officially posted on our academic portal without any hint or any communiqué. That is bad for a communication school,” they howled.
To the utmost surprise of the students of GIJ, results of last semester have been blocked from viewing to which management is asking students to pay their outstanding fees (this semester’s fee) before viewing what their last semester results which they have already paid for.
CTSG in their press release dated Tuesday, October 6, 2020, is calling on the Government of Ghana and the ministry of education to listen to their plea and respond affirmatively to the decrement call form tertiary students.
“A larger number of students are on the verge of dropping out of school because of such an inconsiderate decision. The monetary commitment for the government in reducing school fees would not constitute a disadvantage to other beneficiaries of the Coronavirus Alleviation Program.
We are therefore requesting humbly from the government to pay attention to education as they have started and help Ghanaian Tertiary students in these tough times,” says CTSG.
The convener, Mohammed Samira Ibn Moro, and three members comprising Efo Korku Mawutor, Joshua Anoumou and Ruben Kwabla Amenyedor signed the press released.
