The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization has trained about 13,981 girls in basic
ICT skills since 2012 under the Girls-in-ICT Initiative.
According to the minister, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, since the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) launched the Girls in ICT project and Ghana adopted it in 2012, some 13,981 girls and 1600 teachers nationwide have received training in basic ICT skills.
Speaking at the Greater Accra Region’s Girls in ICT Day climax this year, the sector minister stated that we are quickly entering a digital era where technology is progressively affecting every part of our lives.
She noted that, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have been largely dominated by our boys and this has created a gender digital divide that needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
“We need to introduce deliberate measures to bridge this digital divide to offer a level playing field for our young ladies to also become innovators and problem solvers of our world today and tomorrow.” she stated.
A total of one thousand (1000) girls from basic schools in the region took part in the programme, and the top 100 performers received laptops and cash prizes.
