Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, Works and Housing minister addressed a technical workshop that brought together experts from the World Meteorological Organization, Hydrological Services Department, the Ghana Meteorological Agency and the Water Resources Commission.
It was on the establishment of the Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS) in Ghana.
The minister noted that one of the biggest challenges facing the world today is the global extreme hydro-meteorological conditions, which include frequent perennial floods and droughts, as well as potential disputes over water usage, as a result of increased demand on water resources.
The establishment of the Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSoS) in Ghana will therefore help in monitoring and predicting global freshwater hydrological conditions, and equip our experts, including hydrologists, with modern tools and techniques to develop relevant drought indices, which would be used as proxies to track and quantify droughts.
It will also provide the much needed platform for increased collaboration, among key stakeholders, to better manage, while building our resilience against climate change.
