In an attempt to exercise its mandate of preventing marine source pollution and protection of the marine environment, the Ghana Maritime Authority yesterday disposed of a number of dinghys (wooden boats) berthed at the Sekondi Naval Base.
This was a follow-up to a directive some months earlier, notifying owners of the wooden boats to get them off the premises of the naval base, failure of which was going to trigger the Authority’s right to dispose them off.
The move is aimed at preventing the potential of the use of the dinghy’s for illegal fuel bunkering and pollution of our waters.
Present at the occasion was the Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations and Technical, Mr Daniel Appianin, head of the Takoradi office, Capt. Clifford Agyarko Osei and Ing. Michael Nunoo, also of the Takoradi office.
Also present were the Navy, Marine Police and National Petroleum Authority. The wooden structures were crushed down and burnt to ashes.
