A team of 10 from the Ghana Maritime Authority is on a safety of life sensitization tour of various communities along the Volta River, the Afram, Bosom, Oti rivers and White and Black Volta.
The communities largely rely on inland water transport for their economic and social activities.
The tour is part of the Authority’s routine exercises designed to sensitize the communities to observe safety protocols and prevent boat accidents.
The team, jointly led by Mr. Seth Afotey Odai, Chief Ing. Appiah-Opong and Capt. Darlington Akrofi, will spend the next two weeks sensitizing resident of communities like Kotoso, Akaten, Kwahu Adawso and Ekyi-Amanfrom, on how to wear life jackets to maintain safety while travelling on the Afram River.
The team will also engage indigenes of Bridgeano and Ntonanboma in the northern parts of the Afram Plains, who depend on the Bosom River for their livelihoods and transport needs.
The tour will move on to communities along the Volta River like Agordeke, Yeji, Kete Krachi, Kpando, Dambai and Abotoase for more sensitization on the prevention of accidents, load-line marking and registration of boats in subsequent weeks.
Every year, the Ghana Maritime Authority embarks on these sensitization tours in fulfilment of its mandate to protect life and property in the inland water areas.
