Ghana Maritime Authority chalked yet another milestone on Thursday, signing a Memorandum of Understanding on Reg 1/10 of STCW on mutual recognition of Certificates of Competency (CoCs), with the South African Maritime Safety Authority.
In effect, seafarers issued CoCs by the GMA are eligible for employment on South African-flagged vessels and vice versa.
This makes it 38, the number of countries with this mutual arrangement with Ghana, the last being the United Kingdom and France.
At the signing of the MOU in South Africa, Ghana was represented by the Director General of GMA, Mr Thomas Alonsi, Director of Maritime Services, Nana Boakye Boampong and Capt Clifford Osei, Head of the Authority’s Takoradi office.
The others were; Deputy Director of Maritme Services, Miss Barbara Darko and Dr Richard Lartey, Deputy Director, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation.
