The government will not extend the 19-year-old agreement between Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), according to President John Dramani Mahama.
As a result of the “probable cost savings” from ending the Zoomlion contract, the president has also stated that the government will raise the rates that sweepers must pay.
The president made this announcement in a letter to investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, who asked him to revoke the Zoomlion contract after he provided proof of corruption and poor contract management.
“His Excellency the President acknowledges the serious concerns raised in your letter and responds as follows,” read the June 11, 2025, letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President.
“1. Expiration of Contract: The contract between Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited Zoomlion) has expired and will not be renewed.”
The move will free up funds to increase wages for street sweepers to “a more liveable income.” Poorly performing fumigation contracts will also be reviewed and potentially canceled.
