Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson gave a brief statement at the opening ceremony of the collaborative fisheries research and leadership study tour at the University of Rhode Island.
This program was an initiative of the Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project and the first training was held at the University of Rhode Islands in 2015.
Subsequently, the University hosted the training program in 2017 and 2019; and now in 2022.
The minister took the opportunity to congratulate the University of Rhode Island for successfully organizing the training program since 2015.
She also thanked the University for imparting knowledge to our stakeholders for sustainable management of Ghana’s fisheries resources.
Madam Hawa Koomson thanked the Government of the United States of America for their financial support for implementing programs aimed at ensuring sustainable management of fisheries in Ghana.
Notably among such programs are the Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project and the Ghana Fisheries Recovery Activity Project.
“I am excited to observe that the program had brought together everyone who matters in the management of fisheries in Ghana (academia, legislators, regulators, industry etc) to collectively and dispassionately discuss the challenges facing our fishing industry and find solutions in addition to a number of measures already taken by the ministry to address the myriad of problems confronting the sector”.
“I commended Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Ghana for their support to the Ministry and all the participants for taking time to participate in this important program as well as the University of Rhode Island for accepting to host the Study Tour and the elaborate program put in place for the training. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Majority Caucus – Parliament of the Ghana University of Rhode Island” she stated.
