The Vice President o, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the government is in the process of reviewing the JHS and SHS curricula, to ensure that teaching and learning methods and content in Ghana reflect the realities of the 21st century.
He added that the government has completed a review of the KG and primary curriculum and rolled out in September 2019.
Dr. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said this when he presented awards to 36 deserving students from across the country who emerged as the best Junior High School graduates of the 2018/19 academic year as part of President’s Independence Day Awards ceremony.
He added “We are introducing reforms to teacher education and training because the teacher is at the center of any education reforms. We have also introduced the teacher licensure regime aimed at professionalizing teaching and bringing it in line with international best practices.”
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) said in February 2020 that it has not revised the curricula for Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High Schools (SHS).
In a press release Monday, Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr. Prince Armah said, “the curricula for JHS and SHS were last reviewed in 2010 and 2012 respectively.”
In October 2019, the Education Ministry in partnership with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and Ghana Education Service (GES) held a 3-day Ministerial Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) workshop in Accra.
This was to discuss assessment proposals and make recommendations to guide the comprehensive review of the Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) curriculum.
The workshop sought to create a forum to discuss issues regarding the alignment of the new school curriculum and assessment framework and make recommendations on learner progression and placement from the JHS to SHS.
