The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting journalists from harassment, intimidation, and all forms of abuse as they carry out their professional duties.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama has made it unequivocally clear that the government does not endorse, condone, or tolerate any form of assault, harassment, or intimidation against journalists or any other professional group in the country.
He explained that the President recognizes the critical role journalists play in strengthening Ghana’s democracy by promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. As a result, the government is determined to ensure a safe and enabling environment for media practitioners to work without fear or interference.
According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, the President has also directed that government institutions work closely with relevant stakeholders, including media organizations, civil society groups, and security agencies, to retrain security personnel on appropriate and professional ways of engaging with journalists, especially during public events, demonstrations, and security operations.
The Minister reaffirmed that media freedom remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s democratic system and noted that protecting journalists is essential to safeguarding the public’s right to information. He assured journalists that the government remains committed to upholding press freedom, protecting their rights, and ensuring their safety at all times.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further encouraged journalists to continue carrying out their duties responsibly and professionally, assuring them of the government’s support in promoting a free, independent, and vibrant media landscape in Ghana.
