Accra, July 17, 2025 — The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, has disclosed that traditional leaders across the country have received their allowances for the first quarter of 2025. Disbursement for the second quarter is expected to follow shortly.
She made this known during the official launch of the 2025 Ghana Chieftaincy Awards held in Accra on Thursday.
Hon. Sowah emphasized that the allowance payments reflect the government’s continued commitment to strengthening the role of traditional authority in national development. According to her, these funds are intended to support traditional rulers not only in their ceremonial functions but also in their efforts to bring lasting social and economic impact to their communities.
“Our traditional leaders are not just cultural symbols; they are nation-builders,” she said. “By supporting them with timely financial resources, the government is investing in grassroots development and community cohesion.”
She also commended the organisers of the Ghana Chieftaincy Awards for spotlighting the importance of traditional leadership in Ghana’s democratic and development journey.
“The awards must spark a broader national dialogue,” she urged. “How do we utilize the influence, cultural depth, and leadership of our chiefs to build a better future? This is the question we must all reflect on.”
The Deputy Minister concluded by encouraging Ghanaians to honour and preserve the nation’s rich cultural legacy
