Top officials of the controversial National Cathedral project are set to receive their September 2024 salaries today, despite the fact that work on the project has stalled since March 2022.
The payments have sparked outrage among Ghanaians, who are already frustrated over the US$58.1 million spent on the unfinished project.
Among the beneficiaries are Dr. Paul Opoku Mensah, Rev. Father Ebenezer Saka Ameyaw, and Mrs. Rebecca Lovia Martechoo Yakpo, who together have pocketed over GHS2.2 million in 31 months.
Critics argue the government’s decision to continue paying salaries for no work done is a gross financial mismanagement at a time when workers in other sectors are struggling to receive fair wages.
The revelations have intensified calls for accountability, with some labeling the payments as “wasteful impunity.”
