The Registrar of Scholarship Secretariat, Mr. Kingsley Agyemang, and Education Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh will announce Scholarship packages dubbed “Tertiary Hope for Free SHS Graduates” today.
“The retooled Ghana Scholarships Secretariat is now strategically positioned to effectively deliver on its mandate of awarding scholarships to Ghanaians for tertiary education,” according to Mr. Kingsley Agyemang.
The country’s first district-level scholarship introduced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was launched at Takoradi in the Western Region in July 2019.
It is to drive the government’s development agenda by empowering the metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs) to award scholarships to not only needy, brilliant students but deserving ones as well.
With funds ranging from a minimum of GH¢60,000 to GH¢100,000 made available to the MMDAs, they received scholarship applications, organized selection interviews, and made recommendations for the awards.
About 30,000 students across the country in various tertiary institutions have had their tuition fees paid under the District Scholarship Scheme run by the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat in 2019.
The fees range from GH¢850 for undergraduate students to GH¢34,000 for those pursuing postgraduate and doctoral programs.
