Government has freezed public sector employment from January 2023 as part of the IMF conditionality.
The Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta said this during the presentation of the 2023 budget that there will be “hiring freeze for civil and public servants “next year”.
Meanwhile, government is expected to implement Cabinet directives to reduce expenditure of government to mitigate the current economic crises.
Government has thus banned the use of V8s/V6s or its equivalent except for cross country travel begining next year.
Government has also limited budgetary allocation for the purchase of vehicles and directed for reduction of fuel usage by government officials.
The Finance Minister stated that “all government institutions should submit a travel plan for the year 2023 by mid-December of all expected travels to the Chief of Staff. Only essential official foreign travel across government including SOEs shall be SOEs and fuel depots”.
Accordingly, 50% of the previous years (2022) budget allocation, purchase of new vehicles shall be restricted to locally assembled vehicles.
