He told reporters that Accra International Airport is the anticipated new name for the airport.
Mr. Ayariga claims that the procedure will adhere to established legal procedures and that a bill will be presented to Parliament for review.
He emphasized that such judgments must be grounded in the law and represent the desire of Ghanaians as a whole.
“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” Hon. Ayariga said.
History
During World War II, the British Royal Air Force used the airport as a military facility.
After the war, the facility was turned over to civilian authorities. President Kwame Nkrumah started a construction project in 1956 to transform the facility into a terminal.
When the project was finished in 1958, the military base became an airport that could handle 500,000 passengers annually. Accra International Airport was the initial name of the airport.
In 1969, the Accra International Airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in honour of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka (1926–1967), a member of the National Liberation Council.
Kotoka was killed in an abortive coup attempt at a location that is now the forecourt of the airport.
