As part of a three-year effort to combat young unemployment in the country, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has indicated during his presentation to Parliament of the mid-year fiscal policy review the government has set intentions to generate nearly 1 million jobs.
According to him, the COVID-19 resulted in more people losing their job whereas being difficult to create new job opportunities especially for the youth in the country.
“Despite the generally strong performance of our economy in recent decades, the issue of employment and jobs for our youth, who constitute close to 71 percent of our population, persist.” He added.
For that reason, he launched a new program dubbed “One Million Jobs” to aggressively react to the country’s needs, notably in the areas of job development and employment.
Ken Ofori Atta added that the “One Million Jobs Initiative” will aid in the expansion of SMEs, the backing of new businesses, and the stimulation of innovation and start-ups.
In recent times, the government has been pressed to address the nation’s crises, which have primarily included the creation and admission of young people to jobs, with massive demonstrations on social media dubbed #FixTheCountry.
