Mr. Paul Asumaku, a concerned citizen of the Atewa Landscape, has raised alarm over the increasing violence associated with illegal mining activities in the country, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to the future of Ghana.
He described it as unfortunate that lives are being lost in the struggle to protect natural resources meant to sustain both present and future generations, stressing that families, including wives and children, are being left to suffer after the death or injury of their loved ones.
Mr. Asumaku questioned how NAIMOS personnel assigned to protect forest reserves and lands could be attacked and even shot by illegal miners as contained in a press statement issued by the Lands and Natural Resources ministry.
Speaking in the middle of his submission on Bryt FM’s morning programme, Adekyee mu Nsem, he alleged that some illegal miners, including foreigners, are heavily armed and operate freely within forests and on local lands.
According to him, these miners have become emboldened due to financial backing and support from powerful individuals, giving them the confidence to raise guns against those protecting the environment.
He said these worrying developments should compel concerned citizens of the Atewa Landscape to continue resisting galamsey until the practice is completely stopped.
