The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has extended its condolences to the family of a tomato trader who tragically lost her life in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso, describing the incident as a devastating blow to Ghana’s trading community.
The Eastern Regional Chapter of GUTA paid an official visit to the family of the late Constance Nyarko, affectionately known as Yaa Yaa, to commiserate with them and express the Association’s solidarity during their time of grief.
Leading the delegation, Eastern Regional Chairman of GUTA, Harry Oduro Awuku, expressed deep concern over the attack and its implications for cross-border trade. He assured the bereaved family that GUTA remains committed to supporting the victims and advocating for the safety and welfare of traders who risk their lives to sustain the food supply chain.
Mr. Awuku noted that the tragic incident has sparked fear and anxiety among tomato traders who frequently travel across borders to conduct business. He warned that the insecurity could disrupt supply routes and lead to an increase in tomato prices on the Ghanaian market due to reduced imports.
He therefore called on African governments to intensify security measures along cross-border corridors to protect traders and strengthen intra-African trade. According to him, ensuring the safety of traders is essential for economic growth and regional integration.
The GUTA Chairman also urged the Government of Ghana to fast-track efforts to fully implement the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement to promote safer and more structured trade across the continent. He appealed to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to intervene swiftly by introducing sustainable measures, including expanded irrigation systems and improved agricultural support, to boost local tomato production and reduce dependence on imports.
On behalf of the Aduana Family, the family head, Okore Patrick, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the GUTA delegation for their visit and words of comfort.
Speaking to Nhyiraba Solomon Nartey of Bryt FM, he announced that the funeral ceremony for the late Constance Nyarko is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2026. He further disclosed that the family will finalize all funeral arrangements after consultations with the Nananoom of the New Juaben Traditional Council.
The visit not only served as a moment of remembrance but also highlighted the urgent need for coordinated regional security efforts to protect traders and stabilize Ghana’s agricultural supply chain.
The Eastern Regional Chapter of GUTA presented bottles of water to the bereaved family as a gesture of support and solidarity during their time of mourning.
