Nana Twumasi Dankwa, Gyaasehene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, has blamed Ghanaian leaders for the prevalence of illegal mining in the country.
According to him, politicians and traditional leaders are behind widespread illegal mining in Ghana.
Contributing to brainstorm solutions to illegal mining on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt 99.1 FM, Nana Twumasi Dankwa said foreign miners can’t operate in Ghana without authorization from political and traditional rulers.
Nana Twumasi Dankwa stated that illegal activities have affected water bodies in Ghana.
Meanwhile, Organised Labour has declared a nationwide strike to back their demand for an outright ban on all forms of small-scale mining as a measure to halt the illegal mining menace in the country.
Many Ghanaian workers may not show up for work starting October 10, 2024, as the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and others declared a nationwide strike.
In a high-level meeting between President Akufo-Addo and Organised Labour last week at the Jubilee House, both parties acknowledged the devastating effects of illegal mining and agreed on several measures to address the issue.
The government says it is surprised at the decision of Organised Labour to proceed with industrial action on Thursday in protest of the ongoing illegal mining activities in the country.
