The US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency, Virginia E. Palmer together with the Division Chief for Intercountry Adoptions of the Department of State, Tim Eydelnant, paid a working visit to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) and met with the Leadership – Hon. Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu, Deputy Minister/Minister Designate for MOGCSP, Dr Afisah Zakariah, Chief Director for MoGCSP, Mr Stephen Tikai Dombo, Head of the Central Adoption Authority.
Their visit was to discuss adoption processes between Ghana and the United States under the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption with the Central Adoption Authority under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
The meeting also held deliberations on ways to enhance coordination on adoption cases of Ghanaian children by US citizens under the Hague Convention on Inter-country Adoption.
The Deputy Minister/Minister Designate for MoGCSP, Hon. Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu intimated that Ghana has adhered strictly to the provisions in the Hague Convention on Intercountry adoption and currently implementing the same for both Intercountry Relative and Non-Relative Adoption processes.
She added that there is a need for staff capacity to be built on adoption issues in order to equip them to provide the required services.
Her Excellency Virginia E. Palmer indicated that the US will continue to strengthen its ties with Ghana on adoption and its related issues by ensuring that adoptions are properly regulated and undertaken in line with the Hague Convention in the country.
Present at the meeting also were Mr Jeffery Tomaseyeh and Mr Mawutor Ablo.
